The Antidote

For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So we may boldly say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" Hebrews 13:5b-6 (NKJV)

What is it that you fear?

Is it the upcoming school year, concerns over getting COVID, exposing your loved ones to it or dying from COVID? Has this economy has left you jobless and you are wondering where your next paycheck or meal will come from? Maybe your fear is the upcoming presidential election? Or is it a deeply hidden painful fear of losing a friend because of all of the heated arguments on social media?

Whatever it is you fear, there is an antidote.

FAITH

"The antidote for fear is to have faith that God will meet all of our needs."

He can and He will.

The Bible is full of stories of His love, faithfulness and mercy throughout the ages. In fact the author of Hebrews is reminding his audience of a quote from Psalm 118. He did not want new believers in Christ to forget that the Lord is and was their helper.

When I study the Bible I never want to pull out a verse and use it out of context; so I quickly turned to see what else the Psalmist had to say. To my delight, the theme my Life Application Bible gives to Psalm 118 is:

"We can have confidence in God's eternal love. God's love is unchanging in the midst of changing situations. This gives us security."

This truth penetrated my heart and nourished my soul in a way that I desperately needed. As we are facing so much uncertainty and fear in our world today it is good to focus on something that is certain and unchanging.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever." Hebrews 13:8

Ever since the pandemic began so much has changed. Many of the things we thought we could count on have failed. The world around us has become so loud with so many opinions, worries, demands and instruction. It is difficult to discern and find truth.

This is why I am choosing to filter out the noise and instead lean in closer to a gentle, faithful, unchanging voice that has been there since the beginning of time, My Creator.

"Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. I called on the Lord in distress; The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" Psalm 118:1, 5-6
